Transports with Most Momentum: KNX, RRTS, CNI, KEX sounded relatively best to us, and nobody sounded particularly bad
This month’s Macro examines March and April data. As shown on Slide 8, freight vols on avg. declined 2% y/y in March and are tracking up less than 1% y/y based on preliminary April data after growing close to 3% the 1st two months of the year. Moreover, our proprietary Seasonal Freight Index (Slide 7) has dipped back below 50 the past 2 months after accelerating sharply late last year and early this year.

RRTS reported 1Q EPS $0.01 above Cons. and in line with our expectations. Rev., EBIT and EPS grew 27%, 31% and 17% y/y, generally similar with 4Q. Relative to 2 years ago, Rev. and EPS increased 75% and 153% on a 2-yr stack basis. RRTS also provided 2Q guidance in line with prior Cons. including 25% rev. and 15% EPS growth at the midpoint.
RRTS announced the separate acquisitions of Adrian Carriers and Wando Trucking for a combined $23.2M and a $6.5M potential earn-out for Adrian. The 2 companies combined generated approx. $45M of rev. last year and we estimate about $4-5M of EBIT. These 2 deals represent RRTS’s 1st of the year following 8 tuck-ins last year.
