Ed Wolfe currently serves as the Managing Partner of Wolfe Research, LLC as well as a senior research analyst co-covering the Airfreight & Surface Transportation sector with Scott Group. In the past five years he has guided Wolfe Research from a research boutique covering one sector with ten employees, to a research boutique currently covering seven sectors, which including its affiliated broker-dealer employees over 50 people and growing.

 

Ed formed Wolfe Research, LLC in April 2008, after a distinguished ten-year career at Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. At Bear Stearns, Ed was a Senior Managing Director and a Senior Analyst in the equity research department and was selected to sit on the important Analyst Oversight Committee, as a licensed supervisory analyst. During 2012, Ed was voted to Institutional Investor magazine’s prestigious All America Research Team for the 13th consecutive year, including eight years in the number one spot, and six years on the first-team in Alpha’s Hedge Fund ranking of U.S. Equity Research Analysts. During 2008 the last year when Ed was at a “big bulge” firm, Ed’s market share in the All America Research Team’s poll was more than three times that of the second-ranked competitor in his sector, believed to be the widest majority of all top analysts over their nearest competitor across sectors.

 

Ed has consistently placed in the top ranks according to other polls, including Reuters, Greenwich, Bloomberg, StarMine and The Wall Street Journal. In June 2007, Forbes magazine, in conjunction with StarMine, presented Ed with an award for “Excellence in Investment Analysis” as the most consistent stock picker and earnings estimator for U.S. stocks over the past five years, placing him above all 3,400 analysts on Wall Street.

 

Before arriving at Bear Stearns in 1999, Ed was a Vice President in the Equity Research departments at Deutsche Bank/BT Alex Brown and Schroder Wertheim. Prior to Wall Street, he served as a principal of Schweet Design, a privately held apparel and marketing firm. Among other roles, he managed Schweet’s warehouse in Weehawken, New Jersey, as well as all of the firm’s transportation and logistics needs. Armed with a law degree, Ed also worked as an associate attorney for a firm whose main focus was white collar criminal and civil litigation and as a staff attorney for The Legal Aid Society in the Bronx. He earned a B.A. from Georgetown University and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law, where he was awarded the Joseph Crowley award for academic excellence and commitment to community service.

 

Currently, Ed serves on the Georgetown Wall Street Alliance Board and resides outside of New York with his wife and two children.

 

 

Peter W. Ryan

Peter W. Ryan serves as President of Wolfe Research, LLC. He joined Wolfe Research at its inception in 2008 as Managing Director and Head of Institutional Services. Mr. Ryan was previously involved in the start–up and operation of two highly regarded independent research firms and helped each grow from inception to profitability during his tenure. From 2002–2006 he was a Partner at Empirical Research Partners LLC, where he played a leadership role in many aspects of the firm’s start–up and ongoing operating activities. He was active in establishing, maintaining and growing a number of the firm’s largest client relationships as well as in developing the sales force and marketing strategy. Subsequent to Empirical, Peter joined Strategas Research Partners during its formation. There, he was responsible for the recruitment, training and launch of that firm’s institutional sales force.

 

Peter began his career at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., where he spent nearly a decade as a senior institutional sales person and sales manager. He was a founding member of that firm’s then newly formed international team, and later became that team’s leader. While at Bernstein, he was active in sales training and was a member of the firm’s research recommendation review committee. Following Bernstein, Mr. Ryan also served in senior equity related roles at both Goldman Sachs and Bear Stearns.

 

Peter earned an M.B.A., with distinction, from Harvard University and a B.A. in Economics from Trinity College. He resides with his wife, Susan, and their two children in Larchmont, New York.

 

 

David J. Malat, CPA

David Malat is Wolfe Research’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer. His roles include the development and oversight of the company’s infrastructure including accounting systems, legal, regulatory and compliance practices, broker/dealer soft dollar arrangements, human resources, IT, office administration, vendor relationships and counterparty negotiations.

 

Prior to joining Wolfe Research, Mr. Malat had a distinguished 20 year career as a Chief Financial Officer on the buy side. During his tenure at The Zweig Companies from 1989 to 1998, he presided over a group that provided the operational and administrative infrastructure for its businesses, including open end and closed end mutual funds, two hedge funds, and a consulting business. He was also the President and FINOP of Zweig’s broker/dealer. While at Pequot Capital Management from 1998-2001, Mr. Malat had complete fiscal responsibility for the management company and hedge funds, including venture capital and private equity. He was a member of the firm’s Operating Committee.

 

From 2001 to 2008 Mr. Malat as a CFO helped launch, create and direct the operations of several start-up hedge funds including Searock Capital Management, and Rhombus Capital Management. Prior to his time as a CFO on the buy side, Mr. Malat began his financial services career in 1981 at Spicer & Oppenheim and in 1988 became Vice President in the Controller’s Group at Oppenheimer & Co.

 

Dave earned a BS in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo and is a Certified Public Accountant. He lives in Warren, New Jersey with his wife, three children and their dogs.

John is a Director at Wolfe Research and a member of the Institutional Services team covering both long only and hedge fund clients.

 

John joined the firm in early 2009 and has worked to build out the firm’s institutional services platform. Prior to joining Wolfe Research, John served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. Following a yearlong deployment to Iraq as the leader of a light infantry platoon, John served as the staff supply, transportation and logistics officer for a 450-person unit in the Army’s 10th Mountain Infantry Division.

 

John earned his undergraduate degree from Boston College and resides in Brooklyn with his wife Elizabeth.

Douglas is a Director at Wolfe Research and a member of the Institutional Services team covering both long only and hedge fund clients. His primary territories are Texas, Chicago and New York. Douglas joined the firm in March 2010 and has helped expand the firm’s institutional client base.

 

Prior to joining Wolfe Research, Douglas worked at Merrill Lynch for four years in the Institutional Equity Sales division. At Merrill Lynch, he spent his first two years on the Hedge Fund sales team and the subsequent two as an Energy Specialist.

 

Douglas is a CFA charterholder and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bates College with a major in Economics and a minor in German. He currently lives in Manhattan.

Steve is a Managing Director and Senior Analyst, who launched coverage at Wolfe Trahan in March 2013 of the Utility and Power sectors. He was previously ranked #1 by investors in the 2012 Institutional Investor All American Research poll in the Electric Utilities sector, marking his eleventh selection by Institutional Investor as the top ranked Utilities analyst in that poll. In 2011, he was named to the Institutional Investor Magazine Research Hall of Fame.

 

Before joining Wolfe Research, Steve worked as a Managing Director and Senior Utilities Analyst at Bank of America, in addition to overseeing their Research Equity Portfolios and U.S. 1 List. Prior to Bank of America, Steve worked as a Portfolio Manager at hedge fund Catapult Capital Management from 2006 to 2009. From 1996 to 2006, Steve was a Managing Director and Senior Utility Analyst at Merrill Lynch and before that, he held similar roles at Dean Witter Reynolds and Kidder, Peabody.

Jon Patria is a Director and manages the trading desk at Wolfe Research Securities covering both long only and hedge fund clients. Jon joined the firm in 2012 and has worked to build out the firm’s equity trading platform. Jon brought over 20 years of trading experience to Wolfe Research Securities, most recently as a Senior Vice President at Macquarie Capital, where he was active in establishing and growing the firm’s U.S. equity trading platform. Prior to Macquarie, Jon spent fourteen years at Sanford C. Bernstein & Co, as an institutional equity sales trader.

Craig is a Managing Director at Wolfe Research Securities, Wolfe Research’s broker –dealer affiliate. Prior to joining Wolfe Research Securities, Craig spent seven years with Morgan Keegan & Company, most recently as Co-Head of the Transportation and Logistics investment banking group.

Craig has extensive experience in the freight transportation and logistics sectors and has advised and financed over $30 billion of transactions for both public and private companies. Notable advisory transactions include Con-way Inc.’s acquisition of CFI, Inc. and the sale of CSX’s Horizon Lines. In addition, Craig has participated in numerous capital markets transactions for industry participants including TAL International, Ryder Systems, Swift Transportation and American Railcar Industries.

While at Morgan Keegan, Craig founded the firm’s maritime practice which focuses on the blue and brown water segments with particular emphasis on the inland waterways, terminal operators, stevedores, shipyards, and workboat and supply vessel operators.

Prior to joining Morgan Keegan, Craig was a founding principal and head of the transportation and logistics practice at Legacy Partners Group, LLC. Earlier, he was a senior coverage officer with Credit Suisse First Boston’s transportation and logistics group and led the client coverage effort in New York. Craig also worked as an associate in the M&A groups at Credit Suisse First Boston and JPMorgan Chase.

 

Craig graduated from Villanova University with a BSA in accounting, and received an MBA from New York University’s Leonard N. Stern School of Business.

 

 

Timothy J. Denoyer

Tim is a Senior Vice President and Senior Analyst at Wolfe Research covering the Auto & Truck Manufacturers and Suppliers. Tim launched coverage of the sector on April 8, 2010 and was voted by clients to Institutional Investor Magazine’s Rising Stars survey in 2012 in both the Auto & Auto Parts and Machinery sectors. In 2011, Tim was recognized as a Rising Star in the Auto & Auto Parts sector, and in 2010, he ranked in the 99th percentile of all U.S. equity analysts for earnings estimate accuracy by Thomson Starmine.

 

Prior to covering the Auto & Truck sector as a Senior Analyst, Tim specialized in the Trucking subsector as a Senior Research Associate on Ed Wolfe’s highly regarded Transportation team both at Wolfe Research and at Bear Stearns & Co. His Trucking coverage included Truckload, Less–than–Truckload, Truck Leasing and Truck Brokerage.

 

Before joining Bear Stearns, Tim began his career in equity research at the Prudential Equity Group, where he started in March 2002 covering the Automotive industry. In addition to three years covering auto manufacturers, suppliers and retailers, Tim also worked for a period as an Associate Economist.

 

Tim graduated from James Madison University with a B.B.A in Economics, a Finance minor, and a Financial Economics concentration. He resides in Connecticut with his wife, Anna, and their daughter.

 

 

Robert D. Farley, CFA

Robert is a Director in Institutional Services, where he focuses on client interactions using his in–depth expertise of the Wolfe Research product, having spent four years on the transportation research team at Bear Stearns & Co. Previous to Wolfe Research, Rob earned the title of Vice President in Equity Research, during his time as a research associate at Bear Stearns focusing on the Trucking and Airfreight & Logistics sub–sectors.

 

Prior to Bear Stearns, Robert worked in industry as a Flight Test Engineer at Pratt & Whitney (United Technologies). He was responsible for the assembly, instrumentation, and testing of several commercial and military engine validation programs, interacting extensively with Boeing, Airbus, NASA, the USAF, and various aircraft suppliers to complete flight programs.

 

Robert graduated with high honors with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University where he also played on the Water Polo team and created an online bookstore startup. He is a CFA charterholder, and resides in Connecticut with his wife and son.
