This week in a letter to employees AMR’s CEO noted the company is open to exploring strategic alternatives including M&A. Later, the WSJ reported that AMR would evaluate five airlines for potential M&A: LCC, JBLU, ALK, Frontier, and Virgin America. Here we provide data relating to the network overlap on each, the incremental feed that each airline would provide to AMR’s five cornerstones, as well as our opinion on the likelihood of DoJ approval, the likelihood of a merger actually occurring, and other general thoughts on each scenario.

On Track, Week 27 Ending July 7: Rail Volumes Modestly Decelerate During Holiday Week
Total Week 27 rail vols (1st wk of 3Q) increased 2.8% y/y, decelerated from +3.6% and +3.9% the prior 2 weeks. Vols ex-coal improved 4.4% y/y, also down from +5.6% and +5.3% the past 2 weeks. Note that the rails faced a normal comp with July 4th in the current and year-ago week, although there still tends to be volatility during holiday weeks.
