This week the Teamsters (IBT) announced that a sufficient number of pilots at ALGT turned in authorization cards to request a union election. Union drives in the airline industry probably surprise few investors, but we found union representation in airlines has tended to increase following periods of financial distress, not success. Nevertheless ALGT is among the most profitable airlines in the world and in 2010 pilots were granted a meaningful pay increase tied to margin performance. This isn’t the first time a union has tried to organize ALGT pilots – ALPA orchestrated a card drive in early 2010.

On Track, Week 26 Ending June 30
Total Week 26 rail vols increased 3.6% y/y vs. +3.9% and +2.3% the prior 2 weeks. Vols ex-coal improved 5.6% y/y, the strongest growth since late April. Overall rail vols finished up 1.2% y/y in 2Q, accelerated slightly from +1.0% y/y in 1Q. U.S. rail vols grew just 0.7% y/y in 2Q compared to +3.2% for the Canadian rails.
