On Track, Week 50 Ending December 17: Strong Growth Due to Easy Comp from Harsh Weather
Total Week 50 Rail vols increased 9.7% y/y, accelerated from +3.4% and +3.6% the prior 2 weeks as vols benefitted from an easy comp due to severe winter weather last year across the East and Midwest. Vols are now tracking up 3.4% QTD, improved from +0.7% during 3Q and above our expectations for about 2% growth this qtr. Relative to our expectations, vols so far in 4Q are relatively best for UNP and KSU.
A Lighthearted Look At Some Market Folklore
As we head into the long holiday weekend, investor’s minds, and shortly their bodies, are elsewhere. We always like to take this time of year to pause from our usual research grind and publish a report a bit on the lighter side. As many of our regular readers know, this is a semiannual tradition for us around the 4th of July and December 31st. In the past, we’ve written on classic Wall Street folklore such as the “Nifty 50″, “Dogs of the Dow” and even the “Hershey Bar Index”. Today’s report updates some other classics for year-end such as the “Super Bowl Indicator” and our favorite, the Dart Board stock strategy (which really underperformed in 2011). Enjoy this light read over the long weekend. Happy Holidays.
